The piano has enchanted me, flummoxed me, coaxed me, rebuffed me, rewarded me and laughed at me my whole life.
While I have often yearned to be a virtuoso, I’ve had to content myself with gradually becoming competent. The advantage I have over the virtuosi is that I’ve had to drag myself to my present state over the course of 50 years, and I was awake the whole time. I know how I got here.
The essays in this book mark my current understanding of the piano, how to play it, how to teach it, and how to get better. Above all, I value efficiency of learning, the health of the player, and the contribution of these two elements towards making music.
I hope you find them valuable.
